Nova History

Dr. Bruce Chen had the vision and idea to manufacture and innovate products for physically challenged people.  He was a leading doctor in the field of rehabilitation in the United States for over 10 years.  In 1982, Dr. Bruce Chen with his brother Allen Chen started Nova Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Appliances, Inc. in Taichung, Taiwan.  Dr. Bruce Chen passed away in 1984 after a 13 year battle with cancer.  Allen Chen continued the company despite losing his brother and partner.

With very limited resources, Allen Chen began manufacturing aluminum canes one at a time and selling them locally in general stores and pharmacies.  As he increased production he developed contacts with brokers to manufacture canes in case quantities to the United States and other international cane companies.  Allen soon increased his product line to include other aluminum medical products such as walkers, commodes and crutches.  As the companies production began to increase due to new customers and orders in the United States, Europe and Asia, the Chen family including Allen's wife, two brothers, sister and father came together to help run and grow the company.  By the early 1990s Nova Taiwan was a leading durable medical equipment manufacturer in Taiwan shipping to over 30 countries.  The Chen family saw the U.S. market with the greatest potential and was already OEM manufacturing for a few major companies.  With the inconsistency of OEM manufacturing, the decision was made to start a U.S. company to exclusively market and distribute Nova manufactured products.

Nova Ortho-Med, Inc. was started in 1993 by Sue Chen, the daughter of Dr. Bruce Chen.  The company started with just three employees in a small 4,000 square foot, one dock high building in El Segundo, CA.  Nova Ortho-Med, Inc. quickly realized the competitive environment for durable medical equipment and began to focus on a new product line with great potential.

Nova Ortho-Med's First Home

Rolling Walkers or "Rollators" became Nova's niche product.  Nova pioneered the demand of this product through referral sources such as rehab departments, doctors and caregivers.  Although sales started slowly, the demand for the product began to grow.  Nova offered the unique rolling walker line with other products such as canes, crutches, standards walkers, wheelchairs and bathroom safety equipment to offer a full product offering.

Nova's truly unique place in the industry from the very first sale was the exceptional service provided to the dealer and the end user.  Service in the home healthcare industry was difficult and challenging and end user service from any manufacturer was unheard of.  Nova's foundation for customer service focused entirely on complete satisfaction of our customer…and our customer's customer - the end user. This includes how we answer the phone - by a real person, the best warranty in the industry, the knowledge and compassion of our staff and the genuine desire to help people become more independent.

Twelve years later, Nova has earned a reputation for exceptional product quality and service with the home healthcare industry and more importantly the end user - our ultimate customer.  In 2004 Nova expanded to a national scale by opening the Chicago Distribution center.  From three people to 40, and from 4,000 square feet to over 100,000 square feet the fundamental values of service, quality and integrity remain constant and strong.  As we enter upon an era where the largest age demographic will be 60 and over, Nova will be at the forefront providing home healthcare products that allow people to live more comfortable, active and independent lives.
